Welcome to First Grade
Welcome to first grade. We are so thrilled to have your child in our classrooms. We have spent the first part of this exciting year getting to know your child and going over school rules and expectations. The biggest change for first grade is the grading system. Your child will not receive the ES, MS, or NMS standards based grading that they are use to. They will now receive A, B, C, D, and F in reading and math and E, S, N, and U for science and social studies. Conduct now will be E, G, S, N, and U. Please discuss with your child the importance of doing their best everyday.
Everyday, your child will bring home their agenda book and homework folder. They will have homework Monday through Thursday. Tests will be on Friday or the last day of the week if we are off on Friday. Please check their agenda book each day and initial that you looked at it. If you need to leave a note for their teacher, the agenda book is a good place for that. Graded papers will be sent home every two weeks on Monday. Please look over the papers, have your child complete or correct any incorrect or blank answers, sign and send back to school.
This year First grade will be expected to take the SAT 10 test which is like the T.C.A.P. test that the older grades take. We will only be able to read the directions to your child. So, that means they will have to read the questions and figure out the answer. It is vital that they come to school every day ready to work and do their best. Please encourage them to do their best and tell them that you have confidence in them that they can succeed.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask. We can make an appointment after school to meet with you and discuss them. Thanks for your encouragement and support.
